Biography

Juan Carlos Travieso-Torres is a Full Professor at the University of Santiago of Chile (USACH), specializing in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Advanced Control, and Intelligent Systems. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences with highest distinction from USACH, an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, and an Electrical Engineering degree.

His research has evolved from adaptive and nonlinear control toward advanced adaptive systems integrating Taylor-series-based methodologies, fractional-order control, machine learning, intelligent monitoring, and engineering and environmental applications. His research includes applications to electrical machine drives, renewable-energy systems, industrial processes, and environmental monitoring and prediction.

He has served as Principal Investigator of four major FONDEF R&D projects between 2018 and 2027, with individual competitive funding of up to CLP 411.2 million. These projects have addressed the development of high-efficiency induction-motor drive technologies, progressing through TRL3, TRL5, and TRL7, and the development of intelligent technologies for wetland-health diagnosis, early prediction, and real-time monitoring.

He has authored or co-authored more than 40 indexed scientific publications and two book chapters and is an inventor of two patented technologies in intelligent systems and automation. His work combines theoretical research, experimental validation, technology development, and university–industry technology transfer.

At USACH, he has held several academic leadership positions, including Vice-Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies, Acting Vice-Dean, Research Coordinator, Acting Department Director, Coordinator of the Industrial Automation Program, and Founder and Director of the Laboratory for Automation and Energy.

He also has extensive international industrial experience in engineering and project management, having held senior positions at Bechtel, BHP Billiton, SNC-Lavalin, Fluor, and BRASS. This background supports a research approach strongly oriented toward experimentally validated solutions, technology transfer, and real-world engineering applications.
